Shoka Shofutai
This style of arrangement uses a maximum of three different materials. It is possible to create arrangements utilizing one material (Isshuike), two materials (Nishuike) or three materials (Sanshuike) There are three major elements in this arrangement, the Shin, Soe and Tai.
There are strict measurements for the heights of these branches.
Most critical in a Shoka and also a Rikka arrangement is the Mizugiwa, which is that point at which the branches meet the water’s surface, or what we call edge of vase. The branches are required to be tight and straight, as though the arrangement is emerging from one trunk at the water’s edge.
This Mizugiwa extends approximately three fingers width and there should not be any small stems or leaves protruding into this space.
